Before the Covid-19 pandemic we had hoped and prayed for an ambitious 2-phase building project. However, during the pandemic our income decreased and the projected cost of the building project became too much for us to undertake.
In May 2025 our PCC, having sought advice from our architect and the Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC), closed the church building and a large part of the churchyard due to structural concerns.
St James' Church spire is leaning, and the lychgate is also in need or urgent repairs.
We still long to see St James' church building as an accessible community space, with a warm welcome for all. Improved facilities will enable us to have greater flexibility with our worship and community events, including a new playgroup.
The work will, first and foremost, resolve the spire and lychgate issues, but will also include a new ramped entrance and new paths, improved visibility into the building and more comfortable and flexible seating arrangements.
